From Chapter 1:

The whole process of getting angry may only take a few seconds or a few minutes, and it can happen automatically without your awareness of it. However, all along the way, you have an inner dialog of thoughts, perceptions, beliefs, and feelings. At any point, you have the ability to interrupt these thoughts and question their validity. You can ask yourself why people seem to be mistreating you, if you should take it personally or if their reasons really have nothing to do with you. When you can do that, you can stop yourself from becoming angry.
