William Marshall (1745-1818) was an experienced farmer and land agent who produced this book as a reference work for owners of large estates. It is mainly concerned with the establishment of tree plantations both as commercial investments and for decorative reasons. The first volume includes practical advice on propagation and descriptions of estates such as Stowe and Persfield as models for the laying-out of plantations. The second volume consists of a very useful dictionary of trees and shrubs as well as an introduction to the Linnean system of classification. Provenance: front endpapers with library stamps, crossed through, of the Office of Woods Library, with later stamps of the Crown Estate Office Library. The Office of Woods, more properly called the Commissioners of Woods, Forests and Land Revenues, existed from 1851 until 1924 when its functions were split between the newly-created Forestry Commission and the Commissioners of Crown Lands.ESTC T42443; Henrey 1229.
