These handsome road maps are from John Ogilvy's Britannia, which was the first survey of the roads of England and Wales. It was also the first graphic delineation of roads which established the practice of representing the road on the continuous unfolding strip. It shows the journey from London to Oakeham and further to Richmond in Yorkshire on three separate plates. The route is shown in strips, mile by mile, showing every town, village, wood and milestone along the way. Each strip has a compass rose showing north. Large decorated title cartouche at top centre with royal arms below on each plate. Copper engraving. Very good condition; light offsetting; wide margins. Hand coloured. Size: 44 x 32.5 cm. each.
