Inscribed on the flyleaf to the author's son, Bill (his Hawaii address label, as 'William Richard Oliver', to the verso), by Oliver Onions' widow - 'with love from Mum, Aberdovey, Wales, 1966'. She was the novelist Berta Ruck. On the facing pastedown is a TLs to Ruck from John Betjeman, short but effusive, praising her writing and exalting her late husband whilst agreeing to distribute the cards promoting this edition one such being pasted to the flyleaf beneath her inscription. Further letters adorn the verso and half-title: the former a 2pp. ALs from Joan, Lady Chetwynd, enthusing about this edition and asking for news; the latter a 2pp. ALs from Rosemary Sutcliff, expressing her enjoyment at having written the Introduction to this book and her delight at having it in the present series.
