[Crime Fiction] ILLUSTRATED FOLIO. Octavo (24 x 16cm), pp.xi [3] 119 [3]. Publisher's grey cloth lettered in white to spine, illustrated to front board and spine. With 7 colour illustrated plates by Leger, including a frontispiece, and introduction by Steve Erickson. With the black paper-covered slipcase. Internally bright and clean, slight folding in cloth to back board, minor rolling to upper spine. A fine copy. 'The Postman Always Rings Twice' is considered to be one of the most outstanding crime novels of the 20th century, originally published in 1934. This is the first of Cain's novels and is seen to be the inspiration for Camus' The Stranger. Cain is widely regarded as the parent of the hard-boiled school of American Crime Fiction, and in 1974 he was awarded the Grand Master Award by the Mystery Writers of America.
