A mid 18th century edition of 17th century church leader William Sherlock's treatise on the subject of death, in an attractive panelled calf binding. The twenty-fourth edition of English church leader William Sherlock's treatise on the topic of death, published in Dublin in 1737.In 1686, Sherlock was reproved for his anti-papal preaching and his controversy with the king's chaplain, Lewis Sabran, and his pension was stopped. After the 'Glorious Revolution' he was suspended for refusing the oaths to William of Orange and his wife Mary II, but before losing his position he yielded, justifying his change of attitude. It was during this suspension that Sherlock wrote this work, 'making the press supply the place of the pulpit' and providing chapters on various 'notions of death', the certainty of our death, and the improvement of death.ESTC N12022A fascinating treatise on the topic of death and its relationship to faith.
