Contemporary polished tree calf, the spines with black labels lettered in gilt. Couple of joints split, lower joint of Vol.2 cracked with the board held by the binding cords, but still an attractive set. Written on conjunction with her father this work was first published in two volumes in 1798. Edgeworth, Maria ( 1767 - 1849 ) was a novelist, born in Oxfordshire, but lived the majority of her life in Ireland where from 1783 she assisted her father and later her brother running the family estates. As well as novels she wrote a number of educational books, her - ' . education writings are now remembered at a purely academic level ', Vinson, Novelists and Prose Writers.
