Marilyn A. Bauman, am accomplished artist and writer, studied with Loper for decades and is a self-proclaimed disciple. Loper grew up in the 1920s in Wilmington, Delaware, and he had an unusual desire to define the world around him by drawing and painting pictures. However, young black men who wanted to become artists were likely doomed to fail - even Loper thought so. Nevertheless, when asked what he wanted to be, Loper always respond, "An artist!"

Although angered by the considerable obstacles racism placed at the doorsteps of African-Americans, Loper drew on the support of a strong extended family. Through his paintings, he defined his world, but most importantly, he defined himself.

As he grew older, becoming an artist was his passion, drive, and focus. His world revolved around colors - wonderful, explicit, imaginative, expressive, passionate colors. Loper also became an advocate for making art, and he embraced a mission: sharing his wonderful gift by teaching others how to paint.
