Text and illustrations are in excellent condition. Cloth boards are unevenly worn and soiled. The spine, notoriously fragile, is in several pieces laid in. No Jacket issued. Illustrations by Bernard Partridge, collated, complete with tissue guards. Delightfully illustrated title page. Booksellers mark of "Henry Sotherhan bookseller to the King" affixed at inside bottom corner of front pastedown. Handsome Chicago collectors engraved artist's bookplate. Early in 1876, a small body of English poets discovered the French forms of Théodore de Banville, Clément Marot and François Villon, and determined to introduce them into English verse.Austin Dobson, who had already made successful use of the triolet, was at the head of this movement, and in May 1876 he published in "The Prodigals" the first original ballade written in English. This he followed with "Proverbs in Porcelain" English versions of the rondel, rondeau and villanelle. His work is credited with revival of the poetic spirit of the 18th century, elegantly illustrated in this volume. Priced for your investment in rebinding.
