[1], 364pp. Original diced calf, tooled in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, marbled edged; (joints splitting, corners bumped). From the library of Abel E. Berland, distinguished bibliophile, his bookplate to front pastedown. First Baskerville Edition. The quarto edition was printed the same year as the duodecimo edition. It prints the following plays: Andria, Eunuchus, Heautontimorumenos, Adelphi, Phormio and Hecyra, each play having a separate title with list of characters. Terence was a playwright of the Roman republic, he adapted comedies from the Greek Attic drama and all six of his plays have survived. John Baskerville (1706-1775) was born at Wolverley, near Kidderminster to a small farming family. He moved to Birmingham in 1726, working as a writer, a letter-cutter and a "japanner" (working in varnished goods to imitate Japanese lacquer). About 1750, Baskerville began to plan an additional career as a printer and typefounder, being particularly concerned to perfect a beautiful typeface, more aligned to the work of writing-masters using the new calligraphic styles of Europe. Additionally, he was concerned with constructing printing presses to a high standard in order to produce a very accurate impress. Baskerville is credited with transforming English typography and producing the first modern typeface. Fine Baskerville First Edition of the Classic Comedies of Terence. [2], 364pp. Contemporary French red morocco, gilt line border round sides, gilt spine, inner dentelles, gilt edges; (uniformly toned; corners bumped). First Baskerville Edition. John Baskerville (1706-1775) was a great English type-founder and printer known for his achievements working with classical texts. Along with this Terence text; works of Lucretius, Catullus et Tibullus and Propertius were issued in 1772, and Sallustius et Florus was issued in 1773. These, with the Virgil, are the Latin Classics in quarto printed by Baskerville. They were renowned for being "clear and perfect," referencing the beautiful large type and wide margins. They were printed in Baskerville's declining years, but they stamped him as the first printer of his time. A duodecimo edition for Catullus, Terence, and Horace were also issued in 1772; and for Lucretius in 1773. These Baskerville editions are said to be the most correct, and is thought by some to be the most beautiful of all the books that Baskerville printed. Gaskell 46.
