THREE VOLUMES. 8vo. 6 x 8.5 inches. Vol. I, xix + [i] + 544 pp.; Vol. II, xvi + [i] + 568 pp.; Vol. III, xiii + [1] + 651 + [1] pp. Bound in original full calf with gilt borders to boards and blind stamped inner dentelles; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt with contrasting title labels. All edges and endpapers marbled. Bound by Bickers. A little wear to boards but otherwise a very fine set. The classic work by John Lothrop Motley, The Rise of the Dutch Republic was the first part of his history of the Netherlands to 1609. Motley (1814-77) was born in Massachusetts but moved to England towards the end of his life and also served as a US diplomat. This title was first published in 1856 and its popularity led to the appearance of many editions. A very handsomely bound set by Bickers.
