A little wear to extremities and some light foxing but otherwise a very good copy. Binder's label of Edmonds and Remnants and bookseller's label of D. Wyllie and Son, Aberdeen. Gift inscription of 1864 on first free endpaper with Clova House library stamp, also on title page. Illustrated by 12 engraved plates, including frontispiece. Accounts, frequently dramatic, of natural history encounters around the world. Philip Henry Gosse (1810-88) was a zoologist, field naturalist and religious writer who made a living from his writings, including studies of Canada and Jamaica. He became by the 1850s, one of the leading popularisers of natural history in Britain. The first edition of this title was published in 1860.
