Packed with recipes, many of which named for their originator: Sir John Broughton's Ginger Beer; Mrs Smyth's recipe for potted herrings, as well as some unusual fare: 'a wholesome beverage for the summer months', 'to preserve lettuce stalks as ginger', Adelaide Toast (fat saturated and topped with ham), and the extraordinarily meat-rich 'Yorkshire Pie': 'take a goose, a hare, a rabbit, a tongue, a pheasant, a brace of partridges and a chicken. wrap them all up in the goose, veal, shin of beef, calves feet and fat bacon.'.
