Hartford CT: Small softcover (3.75 x 6 , 95 pp.) printed and sold by Nathaniel Patten in 1792. This is a later printing of the first military regulations issued for the United States Army, a manual of rules, regulations and military drill developed by Prussian-born Friedrich Wilhelm Steuben to train the Continental Army at Valley Forge. It remained the official manual of the U.S. Army until the War of 1812. First published in 1779 by the Philadelphia firm of Styner and Cist. The title page notes that it is Part 1 however no companion volume was ever published. Condition: Softcover in fair condition with what appears to be the original paper cover. Binding is intact but most of the spine cover and all of the back cover are missing. Lacks the original engraved plates (which may not have been included in this edition even though there is a listing on the last page). A well-worn copy with darkened pages and slight foxing. Provenance: An archivist's card (enclosed) states the imprint came from the estate of Cora Brown, who inherited the effects of Eva (Newell) Bosworth in 1939. The original owner was "almost certainly" Eva's great great grandfather, Lieutenant Josiah Newell (1722-1797) of Southington CT; it would have been passed down to Eva s grandfather Cromwell Newell (1790-1859), who was a captain in the Connecticut Militia. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben's 'Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States' is a cornerstone military manual that synthesizes European military traditions with the burgeoning needs of the American Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Written in a detailed and instructive style, the manual serves as both a practical guide and a theoretical framework for military organization, drill procedures, and the cultivation of discipline among troops. The work exemplifies the Enlightenment ideals of order and rationality applied to military practice, positioning itself as a crucial text in the development of American military professionalism. A Prussian military officer who played a pivotal role in transforming the American army, von Steuben's extensive background in the discipline of troops and military strategy informed his approach in this manual. His commitment to reforming the Continental Army stemmed from firsthand experiences in European warfare and a desire to instill a sense of order and efficacy in an army often hampered by inexperience and disunity. These insights showcase von Steuben's transition from a European officer to a key architect in the success of American independence. This manual is highly recommended for readers interested in military history, American independence, and leadership. It reveals the trials and triumphs of transforming an untrained militia into a resilient fighting force. Whether for historians, military enthusiasts, or those seeking insights into leadership and discipline, von Steuben's work remains an indispensable resource that resonates beyond its immediate historical context.
