ppxvi 350 + advert leaf. illustrated with 42 engravings. some wear to the original navy blue / gilt cloth binding, particularly around the spine. internally clean. a nice little Victorian work, being a sweeping chronological history from the Phoenicians to the armour-plated ships of the mid-19th century, with a final chapter on 'modern eccentricities' - mostly torpedoes, and a final lamentation even at this early date of "Is England's Naval Prestige gone?".
