Extremities a little worn and spine dulled, Some foxing throughout, including edges and preliminaries, but otherwise a very good copy. A few pencil notes in text. Illustrated by numerous text figures, drawings and photographs. More than a bibliography, this was originally to be called The Literature of Swimming but 'that title was discarded as being quite insufficient, for during the course of years the work had become encyclopaedic.' A much shorter first edition had appeared in 1868, as 'Swimming: a bibliographical list of works on swimming', by the author of the Handbook of Fictitious Names. Little is known about Ralph Thomas, of Clifford's Inn (b.1840), but his position as an Honorary Member of the Executive Committee of the Life Saving Society, 1898-1904 is reflected in amount of space allocated to the subject of resuscitation in this book. It is certainly the most comprehensive bibliography of swimming up to the time of its publication and is enhanced by all the author's evaluative comments on the literature and by its numerous illustrations, including cartoons.
