The preservation of the paintings is fragmentary and uneven due to the condition of the limestone surface to which they were applied. The surface had been smoothed with a flat chisel which left ridges between strokes, leaving each block with a corrugated finish. The joints between blocks in many instances were bevelled slightly. The preparation of the walls was ideal for the application of a plaster coat which would have covered the masonry joints and which would have adhered well to the ridged surface of the blocks.
