Arranged by Leonard Huxley, with a preface by Sir Clements R. Markham. With photogravure frontis portraits and sketches, coloured plates with tissue guards, panoramas, double-page plates, b&w plates and maps. All plates & maps complete. Rubbing to the spines and corners, a slight lean to the bindings, and some markings to the cloth. Tissue guard at p. 377 torn with loss with some remnants stuck to the plate, alongside an ownership inscription to the ffep dated 1913 some vey occasional pencil inscriptions scattered internaly. An early edition of this hugely influential account of Captain Scott's fateful Terra Nova expedition, in which he and 4 other explorers perished on their return from the Antarctic's geographic south pole. The first volume contains Scott's journals and farewell letters found with his person by a search party 8 months after the expedition. The second volume contains the journals of crew member Edward Wilson, who also died on the expedition, alongside the scientific discoveries of those that survived. This second printing of the text was published the same year as the first edition, as the title was so popular at the time of publication that it required 5 print runs in the 4 months between November 1913 and February 1914.
