The Scrap Book: Containing a Collection or Amusing and Striking Pieces in Prose and Verse

The Scrap Book: Containing A Collection Or Amusing And Striking Pieces In Prose And Verse by John MacDiarmid is a 19th-century miscellany collecting excerpts from prose and verse. It opens with an Introduction discussing the emergence of literary miscellanies in the 19th century, then presents five parts: Descriptive Pieces, Narrative Pieces, Didactic Pieces, Humorous Pieces, and Miscellaneous Pieces, including poetry and fiction, extracts from reviews, anecdotes about Highland life, and travel sketches. It combines descriptions of travel (Missouri Falls, Pompey’s Pillar), biographical and critical essays, humorous satire, and moral didactic pieces on charity, education, and national character. It is a portrait of early 19th-century taste: a mix of moral reflection, satire, and entertainment, drawing on sources such as Edinburgh Review and Blackwood’s Magazine. The work serves as an anthology showing the breadth of English literature, periodical culture, and the appetite for short, digestible pieces. It is not a single narrative but a curated compendium reflecting the era’s literary culture.
