xlviii (48) pages (A Life and an Essay on Fables), then 228 pages of the Fables themselves, all original, complete with Index to all 52 fables. Volume 1 of 3 volumes. Hand colored Vignette to Title Page, a little faded (Jn Lodge Sculp. See image), But a reading copy, lacking top board. However, the original spine and rear board are intact. Some soiling and wear to the Title Page. [Note: The "Other Fabulists" of the book title, are as follows: Book II: fifty-three modern fables, and Book III: all new inventions by Dodsley, so this first volumes is actually the complete collection of Aesop originals]. From public holdings, mainly at Creighton University, this edition is possibly dated 1850, but it feels much earlier. Each Fable has a woodcut vignette as a Header (see images). Interestingly, the first nine fables and Title Page vignette have been hand coloured. An interesting survivor and well worth restoration. [Robert Dodsley, 1703 - 1764, is listed as an English bookseller, poet, playwright, and miscellaneous writer]. Seller Inventory # 005862
