About the book >.>.> THOSE who built the little house on Skokholm and the thick walls of the central room may have been built in the thirteenth century-selected a site which both protected the occupants from the heavy southerly winds and enabled them to watch the coming and going of any boat between the island and the mainland. Thus, from the north side of the house, the island slopes to the sea, giving an un-obstructed view of Jack Sound, that narrow neck through which the silver currents pour and through which the red sails of the fishing boats must always pass. But the north wind, though at times it blows coldly about the house, is never so violent as the south wind. On the south side of the house the view is immediately obscured by a rocky knoll rising higher than our single tall chimney. This knoll breaks the force of the prevalent southerly gales; so that from the south door of the house you look upon a green slope interspersed with red sand-Stone outcrops which are marbled with grey and yellow and wh.
