About this Item
[Privately printed], Colombo (Sri Lanka) 1821. 8°. 16 pages. Contemporary marbled covers with paper spine. Old ink stamp on titlepage. Some brown-spotting to titlepage. * Extremely scarce work from the Danish linguistic genius Rasmus Rask. His work on Singhalese was made during his journey to India, but was unlike his other ground breaking works on the Zend language and Zendavesta written in Danish instead of English. This work on Singhalese writing was not published, but only printed in Colombo, and Rask brought the printed leaves back to Denmark. Here he was unable to find a publisher and a printer who would invest in making Singhalese types, so the work wound up on a shelf. It was posthumously published by his brother with a printed wrapper, on which the story of the publishing was printed. Seller Inventory # 710594
