Two pages, 18vo, battered with closed tears and some grubbiness, but text clear and complete, as follows: "The authorities of the Royal Institution having kindly permitted me to report their lectures in full in the 'Chemical News'. I write to ask if you will allow me to send a reporter to the course which you are about to deliver 'On the Devonian Age of the World'. | Should you be kind enough to grant me this favour I shall be happy to submit the proofs to you for correction & will myself undertake to correct them from the unavoidable errors of reporting ." Note: Crookes founded "The Chemical News" in 1859. Pengelly's work on Kents Cavern (Devonian limestone) may well have figured in this course.
