Gr 4-8-Sleeping is the last thing that happens at a sleepover, and it is usually sandwiched in between meals and snacks. The recipes here would fit any number of occasions, but are arranged in "sleepover order." Beginning with "Starter Snacks," Warshaw proceeds to dinners, "Sacktime Snacks," breakfasts, and brunch, and then concludes with a special section of "Birthday Surprises." The treats are easy to prepare, some incorporating ready-to-use ingredients like canned soup and refrigerated biscuit dough. Each recipe begins with a list of supplies and a difficulty rating. "Chewy Pretzel Letters," "Creative Crepes," "Biscuit-Bite Pizza," "Fundue," "Confetti Taco Salad," and "Fluffy S'mores" all are fun to make and eat. Bold color photographs highlight almost every spread, with sleepovers pictured for boys and for girls. Ethnic representation is balanced, and a girl with Down's syndrome is included. This is a cookbook with attitude, especially in its commentary, which takes a wry approach to interactions between partyers and parents. Safety tips are headlined, "Read This or Die!" and feature comical worst-case scenarios for violators. Joan Scobey's The Fannie Farmer Junior Cookbook (Little, Brown, 2000) is a more comprehensive, newly updated source of recipes for this age group. Still, The Sleepover Cookbook will appeal to kids any time of day.-Joyce Adams Burner, Hillcrest Library, Prairie Village, KS
