8vo, xii, 283, (1) pp. Frontispiece and 16 pages of black and white photographs, inscribed from the author on the fly leaf with a typed letter signed from him loosely inserted. Original cloth, recently recased, spine and edges browned. The inscription reads "To Major Gould Marks, M.C., To help you while away long office hours.", while the letter mentions Marks' assistance in finding a garage for Evans' car - "my driver. lives quite near Lex Garage, and she will be available to drive round for me directly the "Alert" sounds. I promised the Prime Minister that I would always go where the blitz is fiercest to encourage the Civil Defence workers and the public." Scott's second in command on the fateful Terra Nova expedition, Evans got to within 150 miles of the South Pole but became seriously ill and was forced to turn back. After a successful Naval career he retired in 1941 and was appointed London Regional Commissioner for Civil Defence for the rest of the war. Seller Inventory # 47316
