A collection of whisky labels issued by Mitchell & Co of Belfast, kept by the company as a record of copyright and registrations. These books contain labels for their signature whisky and other releases, including the Irish brand "Cruiskeen Lawn", "Glasgow's Old Heather Dew", and a gin for the Dutch market called "Rip Van Winkle." Originally situated by the river on 84 Tomb Street, Mitchell & Co was famous for their signature "Old Irish Whisky", which was awarded a Gold Medal at the New Orleans Exhibition in 1885. The distillery was founded by the Glasgow born brothers William Charles Mitchell (1834 - 1894) and his brother David Mitchell (1838 - 1917), who were from the same family that founded the Springbank distillery in Campbeltown. The Mitchell & Co distillery would close sometime in the 20th century due to the economic depression in Ireland. 2 vols, quarto. With 62 whisky labels. Original green skiver and diagonal-grain cloth boards lettered and decorated in gilt, vol. I with green endpapers and pages, red edges, vol. II with gilt floral patterned endpapers. Previous owner's notes to front endpaper and contents relating to copyright of labels. Spine ends on vol. I chipped, sides rubbed, contents a little toned, labels bright: very good copies.
