Contemporary half calf, gilt spines with maroon labels First published between March 1711 and December 1712, with the eighth volume containing the continuation of the last 80 issues, published between June and December 1714. Addison and Steele shared the bulk of the writing between them - the essays are a wide ranging and apolitical view of the times which proved enormously popular, and subsequently influential upon later periodicals.
