Statistics And Probability Theory: Measures of Central Tendency, Statistical Techniques, Probability Distributions

The book covers the topics of Statistics syllabus of Bachelor Degree in Maths., Stats., Engg. course in most of the Universities in the world. Knowledge of foundational courses in maths. such as classical algebra, trigonometry, 2-dimesnional analytical geometry and calculus is needed. The subject is introduced here ab initio and is presented in most lucid manner. It begins with preliminaries of maths. like Number System, binomial theorem of classical algebra, Power series, Taylor & Maclaurin's theorems, and Eulerian integrals (beta & gamma functions) in Chap. 1. The 2nd chapter on 'Curve fittings' also deals with maths. for its applications in Chap. 5 on Statistical Techniques. With such background of maths. a learner finds Stats. from Chapter 3 onward. Elementary concepts of statistics & probability such as 'Measures of Central Tendency' - mean, median and mode are given in Chapters 3-4. Advanced statistical topics of moment, kurtosis, skewness, different methods of distribution of data (binomial, Poisson and normal) are introduced in Chapter 5. The last chapter deals with various Tests of Significance: Pearson's chi-square-test, Student's t-test and Fisher's t-test are given. A selected bibliography of the subject is provided. Chapters are arranged into Sections numbered chapter-wise. The discussion within the Sections is presented in the form of Definitions, Theorems, Notes, Examples and Problem-sets. These sub-titles within the Sections are numbered in decimal pattern. For instance, the equation number (c, s, e) refers to the eth equation in the sth Section of Chapter c. When c coincides with the chapter at hand, it is dropped. Foot-notes are arranged serially and are explained at the end of the chapter. A historical development of the subject is presented in Appendix 1 Miscellaneous Learning Centres of the subject in India, pioneers in the field (of past era as well as contemporary successful authors are included. Some model syllabi of the course are also listed in Appendix 2. It also includes the syllabus of two courses prepared for the UCC in the past. The book ends with an Alphabetical index of the terms appeared in the text with relevant page(s).
