Dit boek behandelt de geschiedenis van de steenkoolontginning in de Limburgse regio, met name hoe de exploitatie van steenkoolmijnen de provincie heeft veranderd. Het beschrijft de opstart van de mijnbouw, de technische en sociale omstandigheden waaronder de mijnwerkers werkten, de infrastructuur en bewoning (mijncités) die rond de mijnen ontstond, en de gevolgen voor het regionale landschap, de economie en de samenleving. Het legt uit hoe het steenkoolbekken van Limburg zich ontwikkelde in de 20e eeuw, welke uitdagingen er waren (zoals diepte van de lagen, infrastructuur, arbeidskrachten) en hoe uiteindelijk de mijnindustrie vorm gaf aan de stedelijke en industriële ontwikkeling in de streek.
