First edition, second issue. 8vo. xvi, 263, (1) pp. Publisher's green cloth, gilt lettered to the spine, inscription to the half title ("Falgate"). A handful of black and white illustrations in the text. Some wear to the cloth with darkening towards the top of the rear board, staining along the upper and fore edge of the title page, else very good. Geikie's first book, it was initially published by Thomas Constable in Edinburgh earlier the same year. Geikie recounts in his 1924 autobiography "A Long Life's Work" that the book was met with "a favourable reception by the press". So much so that it came to the attention of Alexander Macmillan in Cambridge who acquired the remaining stock from Constable and duly "substituted a new title-page with the name of his firm as its publishers". Geikie closes the passage by remarking that the work "was never reprinted". Neither issue is common.
