Frontispiece contains a photograph of Florence Nightingale with Longfellow's poem, Santa Filomena, which was a tribute to Nightingale, "the lady with the lamp." Ownership information of Florence Wheeler on front pastedown. Pages tanned and some foxing to pastedowns; a few light pencil notations in text. Binding and interior otherwise in very good condition. The book is organized into three sections, roughly corresponding to I. the history of nursing and the nurse as individual, II. ethics in nursing schools and hospitals, and III. ethics as they pertain to the nursing career. This fourth edition adds a chapter to section I: The Hospital and the Nurse as Social Factors in the Community. Using examples drawn from life, Aikens addresses the potential ethical concerns in conduct and duty, with regards to money, in economy and wastefulness, regarding tact, and more. She also discusses the nature of accidents in the hospital, and which parties can be considered at fault. The reader is then asked to imagine ways in which the accidents might have been avoided. Aikens also discusses the field of nursing from a broader perspective, taking on the different settings in which nurses work, managing savings and investments, and more.
