Hardback. Tall 8vo, 1st edition, 2 volumes. Volume 1: (Illustrated fold-out) + (xvii) + (3) + pp 424. Volume 2: (vii) + (1) + pp. 425-842. Each volume has a list of illustrations. (chromolithographs and wood engravings) Complete with all plates and illustrations present. Publisher's original maroon cloth with blind-stamped borders. Gilt decoration on the front boards and gilt lettering to spines. The spines have been relaid in each volume. Some shelf wear to cloth bound covers, some rubbing and spotting on front and rear boards. Moderate foxing on some of the plates, understandable for the age. Volume 2 has an ink stain along it's lower fore-edge. Board-edges are slightly worn. Otherwise this set is in Very Good condition. The Tiping Rebellion was a widespread civil war in outhern China from 1850 to 1864, led against the authorities by heterodox Christian convert Hong Xiuquan, who having received visions, maintained that he was the younger brother of Jesus Christ. Lindley (1840-1873) had been an Honorary officer in Chung-Wang's guards, a special agent of the Ti-Ping General-in-Chief, and a commander of the "Loyal and Faithful Auxiliary Legion" . He was a Royal Navy officer who, along with his wife Mary, joined the 1860 Tiping reform movement in China. He trained Tiping soldiers using modern techniques.
