A finely bound edition of Arthur Rackham's illustrated version of Charles and Mary Lamb's classic work (1807). Fourteen of the stories were Mary's work. The collection was initially intended to appear anonymously, but the Lambs were otherwise persuaded. It quickly gained popularity and has remained continuously in print ever since. Octavo (205 x 133 mm). Colour frontispiece and 7 colour plates, black and white illustrations to text. Contemporary red calf by Bayntun-Rivi�re, blue and green labels, compartments framed with gilt floral tooling, double gilt fillet to boards, floral gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. A touch rubbed, else fine.
