A charming pocket-sized edition of Combe and Rowlandson's satirical poem illustrated throughout with hand coloured plates. A satire of the travel writer William Gilpin, who originated the idea and aesthetic of the picturesque.A later edition of this work, which first appeared in 1812.Written by William Combe, best known as the author of this work.With the classic hand-coloured plates by Thomas Rowlandson, a caricaturist and artist. Volume I contains twenty-nine plates and is lacking two plates, with plate 20 misbound later into the volume. Volume II contains twenty-three and is lacking one. Volume III contains twenty-four and is complete.Comprising the first, second and third tours of Doctor Syntax. Complete in three volumes, which have been smartly rebacked. In a half calf binding; rebacked with a modern spine, preserving the original boards. Externally generally smart; boards are a little worn and discoloured, and extremities are bumped. Internally, generally firmly bound, with a little strain to the hinges. Pages are a touch spotted. Some loss to the head of the first page of the volume, where presumably a prior owner's name has been torn away. Very Good. Seller Inventory # 796R54
