Classified "secret", these handbooks were issued to security personnel in a central government ministry just a few months after the founding of the People's Republic of China, when Mao's government faced daily threats from a large underground network of Kuomintang spies and operatives. The materials stress the importance of counterintelligence, invoking the examples of Nazi Germany and Japan, and give examples of recent domestic threats to show the need for vigilance. Volume II offers guiding principles for intelligence work, recording evidence, and interrogating informants and suspects. 2 vols, pp. 28; 16. Text mimeographed in red and blue. Mimeographed cover sheets, leaves wire-stitched as issued. Vol. II with contemporary ink stamp of Huabei regional government; contemporary manuscript numerical designations and a few corrections. Fragile paper chipped and creased, ink light in places but nearly all still readable, recent paper repair to final leaf of Vol. II: very good.
