Platt, a noted medievalist and the author of many books on medieval England, has written a very personal and entertaining travel guide. His narrative avoids the major population centers (even cathedral cities); instead it is to the ruins and manors of the English countryside and small towns that he is drawn. The eight tours describedranging from the Cotswolds to North Yorkshireinclude a simple merit-starring system and suggested itineraries. This may be just the book for those wishing to escape England's overcrowded and overpriced tourist sites and explore more fully the richness of England's medieval past. Recommended.
