The first diary is primarily concerned with steam ships, engines, cannons and the manufacture of iron. For example - 'Went on board the iron ship Ironsides, Clinker built - rivets counter sunk, Stem and Stern port solid 3 in. thick, plates brought up at ea. side of them & rivetted thro, each rivet passing thro' plate stem or stern port & plates, strong iron knees at intervals of abt. 2ft. or 18 in. transversely across stem post rivetted also to the plates.' *The author was clearly actively involved with the current developments in engineering - the Liverpool-Manchester line was, for example, opened in 1830 and was the first to have a system of signalling. The two references to photogenic drawing are directly contemporary with Daguerre's formal announcement of his photographic process in 1839.
