12mo. 6.5 x 4.25 inches. xii + 456 pp. Presentation binding in full calf with blind stamped borders enclosing gilt block of Edinburgh Institution on front board; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt with contrasting black morocco title label, gilt. Binder's label of Seton, Edinburgh. A little wear to extremities, including head and tail of spine and traces of scattered foxing: otherwise a very good copy. Premium label of 1846 presentation of the Edinburgh Institution for Languages, Mathematics, Etc. Illustrated by 61 engraved figures in text. A volume of economic botany and plant products produced in The Library of Entertaining Knowledge series (1829-38) of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge which existed 1826-46. It describes plant used for cloth making, cordage, paper, tanning, oils, dyes and gums, etc. Companion volumes covered timber, fruit and food plants. Authorship has been variously ascribed to Charles Knight, the publisher and to Mrs Sarah Porter (Library Hub). In a fine presentation binding of the Edinburgh Institution. Founded by Patrick Marrin's father George in 1946, Marrin's Bookshop has been based in its current Folkestone location since 1963. Patrick has worked in bookselling since 1970. As well as rare antiquarian books, maps and prints, the stock includes a wide range of literature, library sets, travel, history and illustrated books in all fields.
