Sixty superb views of the Lake District by William Green (b. 1760), expertly etched to capture both the close detail and hazy distant vistas of the low and high peaks. The tarns, waterfalls, hills, dales, houses and lakes are described in the accompanying letterpress pages (and include Rydale, Loughrigg, Lowdore, Eagle Crag, Stockley Bridge, Honister Crag and Crummock Water). In 1800 Green bought a cottage in Ambleside and set himself up as an artist and engraver, walking and scrambling through nature to capture these views. He was a keeper of alternative place names and he 'railed against the loss of an older world [.] he depicts buildings unaltered from the seventeenth century, longhouses with timber mullions, fire windows and wrestler slated roofs drenched in moss and ferns' (ibid). (See: Deborah Walsh: 'A Man before his Time', Cumbria and Lakeland Walker, November 2025, 48-51).…
