Two works in one volume, 8vo; pp. 115, [i] blank; pp. [iii] - 112; both volumes browned throughout due to paper quality, pp. 63-5 and p. 95 of first work detached (foreedge chipped and nicked), upper margins nicked with slight loss of pp. 35-44, upper corners missing and lower corners folded and weak pp. 45-62; with a few further small marginal tears and nicks; in the original black publisher's cloth, spine ruled and lettered in gilt, head and tail of spine slightly worn and bumped, spine faded, covers a little scuffed and soiled; with pencil signature of 'H. A. Harben, 1910' on first half-title and his book-plate on front paste-down. Two uncommon anti-vice works from the early 20th century, based upon a series of articles previously published by 'M.A.P.' 'The dominant white slavery discourse at the turn of nineteenth century was largely constructed around the crude juxtaposition of dangerous, foreign men and innocent, white women. The similarities with modern-day anti-trafficking rhetoric are striking. Both narratives, particularly in popular culture and the media, toy with details of innocence and ruin of the victim, coupled with the demonisation of foreign men. Anxieties about race, nationality, and immigration underpinned much of the debate on trafficking. Indeed, the racially neutral term 'traffic' only replaced 'white slavery' in international law in 1921, with the League of Nations International Convention to Combat the Traffic in Women and Children' (Laura Lammasniemi, 'White Slavery': the origins of the anti-trafficking movement', November 2017, on openDemocracy).
