12 volumes octavo 8 3/4 x 6 inches- handsomely leather bound in period half light calf gilt over marbled boards with twin leather lettering labels, top edges gilt. Complete. Illustrated with frontispieces. Edited by W. E. Henley. Blank endpapers spotted otherwise a lovely set. Tobias George Smollett (c.1721-1771)- writer and doctor. He was best known for writing picaresque novels such as The Adventures of Roderick Random (1748), The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle (1751) and The Expedition of Humphry Clinker (1771), which influenced later generations of British novelists.
