4to. 12 x 9.5 inches. 294 pp. Bounds in original blue cloth, gilt, in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper. A very good copy. Illustrated throughout in colour and black and white. Catalogue of the Tate Gallery exhibition with 174 main entries, of the work of Joseph Wright of Derby (1743-97), landscape and portrait painter. Wright, a member of the Lunar Society of Birmingham, was inspired by his meetings with pioneering industrialists and intellectuals like Erasmus Darwin and is regarded as the first painter of the British enlightenment, expressing the dynamic of the early industrial revolution, with notable works showing the contrasting effects of bright light with dark backgrounds. It includes essays on the Lunar Society, on prints and engravings of Wright's work, his techniques, his picture frames and a chronology. Catalogue by Judy Egerton (1928-2012), Australian born art historian and curator, who was Assistant Keeper at the Tate Gallery, 1980-88, and who advised the National Gallery on the British School section of its revised catalogue, 1980-88. She also worked on William Hogarth and wrote the significant catalogues of George Stubbs, curating the Tate's exhibition of 1976.
