Publisher's original crimson cloth, titled in gilt to spine, ornaments blind-stamped to boards. Printed on laid paper. Fore-edge uncut, some gatherings unopened. Former ownership stamp of one A. C. Hutchinson to front paste-down. Slight shelf-wear to extremities; top edge dusty. Nicks to margins of text-block; contents evenly toned, commensurate with age. A very good copy. The most detailed defence of the Salem witch trials, written by one of their chief agents. Cotton Mather (1663-1728) was a Puritan clergyman and author regarded as the 'first American Evangelical'. Increase Mather (1639-1723) was sixth President of Harvard College from 1685 to 1701, and an influential figure in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Increase Mather wrote numerous works on witchcraft, the essay republished in this volume provides his defence of the Salem Witch Trials.
