About this Item

Description:

FIRST EDITION, 955/1,000 COPIES signed by Reynolds Stone, 351 illustrations, pp. 48, [126, plates], 49-53, [iii], 4to, original maroon buckram, backstrip lettered in gilt, top edge maroon, dustjacket backstrip slightly toned and with a few nicks, short tear at upper fold of rear flap, very good. An attractive overview of Bewick's work, chosen and introduced by a renowned fellow wood-engraver: 'As in all his best work, it is a quality that has more to it than good drawing and good engraving happily combined; more than pattern-making and a technique that will always be of interest to engravers and collectors. For behind these skills was that strong love of the object, whether bird or rock or verdure, which was implanted in his childhood and which all his life he was struggling to express.' Hardcover. tall8vo, 24.5cm, 55p., plus plates containing 351 illustrations, Limited edition of 1000 signed copies, this being #119, signed Reynold Stone, original maroon book linen, gilt spine titles, small personal ink stamp on the free fly else a fine copy (Igc). Thomas Bewick, (1753 1828), was an English wood engraver and ornithologist. He devoted himself entirely to engraving on wood. His art is considered the pinnacle of its medium. His methods, unlike his predecessors, was to carve in harder woods, notably box wood, against the grain, using fine tools normally favoured by metal engravers. This proved to be far superior and has been the dominant method used since. Seller Inventory # 30261
