16mo, pp. iv, 380 + engraved frontispiece, title-page, and 8 plates. Contemporary black skiver, spine lettered in gilt, boards blocked in blind, marbled edges. A touch of spotting. Binding rubbed. A scarce and cheaply produced printing of this perennial clandestine bestseller of reproductive health. Anonymous and undated editions proliferated for more than a century, making this difficult to date, but two holdings at Oxford and the Royal College of Physicians in London with the same pagination suggest it was printed in the 1850s or 1860s. Besides the lack of publisher on the title-page, this edition also bears no colophon, though it may have existed and not made it onto the page, as about half of the signatures are barely visible due to poor inking.
