A superbly bound set of the first edition of Cowden Clarkes's edited works of Shakespeare, bound by the publisher Bickers and Son with their stamp to the front free endpaper verso. Mary Cowden Clarke (1809-1898) "felt particular 'pride and gratification'" in having edited the works of Shakespeare "as it made her 'the first (and as yet, only) woman editor of our great poet'" (ODNB). Jaggard, pp. 534, 537, & 542. 4 vols, octavo (212 x 132 mm). Finely bound by Bickers and Son in polished tree calf, burgundy and brown morocco labels, richly gilt in compartments, raised bands, roll to boards gilt, pictorial block to front board gilt, marbled endpapers and edges. Frontispiece portrait to volume I, 66 lithographic plates. Title pages printed in red and black. Illustrated with 66 photographic plates after original works in the Boydell Gallery, established in 1786 by the engraver and publisher John Boydell (1720-1804) to promote British history painting.
