An attractive prize binding, from the collection of the prominent mathematician George Neville Watson (1886-1965). Two front pastedowns feature labels from Trinity College, Cambridge, dated 1907, awarding Watson with a "First Class in the Examination for the Mathematical Tripos" and a "Second Reading Prize". The first work, Waverley (1814), established the "archetype of the historical novel throughout the world. At one blow Scott had established a new literary form" (PMM). This set was originally published in 25 volumes. 8 vols, small octavo (153 x 100 mm). Frontispiece in each volume, 15 plates. Title pages printed in red and black. Contemporary red calf by Deighton, Bell & Co., spines lettered in gilt, compartments tooled with coat of arms and thistles, covers with Trinity College Cambridge coat of arms in gilt and gilt border with floral cornerpieces, gilt roll on board edges, turn-ins decorated in blind, marbled endpapers and edges. Spines slightly darkened, bindings with a few small marks and abrasions, occasional foxing and creasing to contents. A very good set.…
