An attractive set, in a nice contemporary binding, and containing the classic poems The Rape of the Lock, An Essay on Man, and The Dunciad. 8 vols, duodecimo (160 x 96 mm). Bound without half-titles. Vol. V front free endpaper stuck to front pastedown; vol. VII, pp. vii/viii misbound following title page. Contemporary calf, twin dark green spine labels, raised bands decoratively ruled in gilt, blind tooling and gilt device in compartments, twin gilt fillets bordering covers, corners of board edges gilt, blind roll on turn-ins, brown endpapers, edges marbled, green silk bookmarkers. Bookplate of Rev. Gilbert Alder (1800-1887) or his son, a coal merchant of the same name (1829-1916). A little rubbing, shallow loss to couple of headcaps, small white mark on front cover of vol. II, occasional closed tears or paper flaws, just affecting text at vol. VIII, pp. 79/80, contents generally clean. A very good set.
