Minor wear to extremities, but otherwise a very good copy. Armourial bookplate of N. Mac Eacharn, Galloway House, Wigtownshire. The first novel of Charles Kingsley (1819-75), a Christian Socialist, which was published in magazine parts from 1848 and first appeared in book form in 1851. It is a radical condemnation of the the English class system and the poverty of the rural shires, which also attacks Roman Catholicism and the Oxford Movement. An attractively bound copy.
