4to. 10.25 x 7.25 inches. lxxxi + [iii] + 500 pp. Bound in quarter brown cloth, gilt, over grey cloth, in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper. As new condition. Illustrated by diagram. Pictorial endpapers. The first volume of a canonical work of the Kabbalah, the bulk of it consisting of a running commentary on the Torah from Genesis to Deuteronomy. Volume One, the first of nine volumes in this edition, includes the Zohar's original introduction to the work along with explication of the stories of Creation, Adam and Eve and Noah's Ark. The introduction by Arthur Green examines the historical and literary significance of the Zohar in the context of the Kabbalah and the translator's introduction by Daniel Matt describes his establishment of the Aramaic text, with suggestions on how read the work. The Zohar (Sefer ha-Zohar, The Book of Radiance), emerged mysteriously in medieval Spain toward the end of the thirteenth century. Some authorities attribute it to Moses de Leon (c.1240--1305), but this is controversial. It was first published in Aramaic in 1558. Daniel Chanan Matt (b.1950) is a leading authority on the Kabbalah and has taught at Berkeley, Stanford and Jerusalem.
